IFCA Continental Tire Test Racing

Post by GTDon2 on Sun Jul 29, 2018 11:19 am

There will be 2 races of 10laps each and 2 cars to race.  You will have to race both cars each Saturday @ 7pm EST.  The point is to see if the cars are equal, and if not to adjust the builds.  I will take the average lap of each car to compare.  With a lot of drivers this will give us a very good idea which car might be superior across all skill levels.  Please make it a point to invite 1 of your friends to help test each Saturday.

911 vs GT350R

Post by GTDon2 on Sun Aug 05, 2018 1:14 pm

This matchup proved to be a great success our first time out on the track with them.  Early on, the consensus was that the 2004 Porsche 911 GT3 was the superior performance car.  It felt faster and was, in fact, it went faster with a higher top end reaching speeds of 182mph to the Mustangs 177mph.  So almost everyone decided to qualify with the 911.  That is, everyone except the eventual winner and multi-time champion GTDon. Oh, and Midnight Rider too!  The result? GTDon took the pole position with a 1:46.689, a personal best!  The low-end grunt of the GT350R's V8 and mid-range power enabled the Mustang to pull the little Porsche out of the corners and gave it great momentum down the straights.  The 911 though speedier with better aerodynamics needed the entire banking of Daytona to catch up!

Truth is both cars are neck and neck at Daytona.  This could change at a track known for handling, however, everyone felt that the comparison was good and fair and that these two cars should remain as they are for now.  And their laps time show it.  Fastest clean lap for the GT350R was GTDon with a 1:48.710, and the fastest clean lap for the 911 was 1:49.365 by PedanticSquirel in qualifying.  GTDon ran a draft assisted 1:48.017 dirty in the 911.

In the end if you average all of the best laps dirty or not from the top 5 drivers in the field the Mustang GT350R ran an average lap of 1:50.166 to the 911's 1:50.220,  This is only a 0.054sec difference! That's very close.  We'd have to say the Mustang was somehow slightly more consistent to drive even though it really didn't feel like it.

The Mustang managed to win both races with two different drivers, but only because GTDon blew a corner in race 2 while leading in the 911.  Rae 2 was a photo finish with GTDon catching back up and reeling in PedanticSquirel  to within 0.112sec at the finish line.  Still, GTDon took the overall victory by a safe 4.521sec. NellyDRacer, last weeks champion took a distant 3rd place overall.

The racing itself was extremely close, fun, and funny with tactics that are not normally seen in a more official race, (read PedanticSquirel) but no harm no foul. lol

Our official event starts Saturday, Sept 8th @ Daytona, until then we will continue to pick 2 cars to test race each Saturday.  The schedule for the season will mirror the real Continental Tire series with 11 races at roughly the same tracks.

Make sure you practice the Daytona Sports car road track.
When I see "Daytona", I think of the Oval!

It is important for everyone to start thinking of grabbing a teammate, someone reliable.  The regular season is a 2 man team season understand.  You can change teammates during the season and retain your team points too, but no singles will be allowed to race.

I will put up a sign-up sheet soon.

For you who are interested, i have a ghost in one of the Camaro's in the new time attack rivals mode you can run against at Daytona. It's a very nice guage lap of just 1:49.6 to compare to.

Correction, it's now a 2016 Mustang GT. lol

Nice quick little practice Rider. You did very well considering you are not 100%. My best in the 911 was a 1:49.3

Wow! I ran a 1:50.9 in the Porsche! cheers
Then I discovered that When I started Rivals, I hit the enter button and without paying attention, the game upgraded to wide tires. Embarassed

After resetting my build, my best was in the 1:52's Neutral

A little better 911 1:50.943 Turn 1 to turn 2 good entry and exit speed. Bus stop exit out a little bit quicker.

Looks like both cars work equally well for you at Daytona which is the desired effect.  However, at different tracks they will be less equal.  The Porsche tend to do better on shorter tracks.  And this is the puzzle you and your eventual teammate must try to solve.  Which car is going to give you the most bang for the buck across all 11 tracks?

Really good racing out there yesterday.  Yeah, a couple of bumps and bruises but nothing too out of the ordinary.  As intended and predicted Morbid was the man to beat even in his downgraded width tires.  He also had no practice and no tune, and still managed to win the first race in the Merc GTR over GTDon (me) in my Merc GTR.  Morbid had a 2sec lead going into race 2 and switching to the 911 but the quirky Porsche proved too alien to jump in and go fast without much practice or tuning for Morbid and both PedanticSquirl in his Merc, and GTDon also in a 911 chewed up his 2sec advantage rather quickly.

more details to follow...

Post race results of GTR vs 911

Post by GTDon2 on Sun Aug 12, 2018 7:36 am

One would have to say that the 2017 Merc GTR has a slight edge here at Daytona with its greater top speed over the 2019 911.  But have a care, the Porsche gets its day at shorter tracks I assure you.  Despite being almost stock and giving away some 5mph on top speed, the Porsche proved to be very competitive still. A real testament to the design of the new Porsche 911.

The Mercedes did take the pole with a 1:49.517 by GTDon, and fastest lap of the meet by Morbid with a 1:49.216, to the 911's best of 1:49.309 also by GTDon.  These numbers as you can recall are slower than the previous weeks test cars which ran into the 1:48s.  But both Morbid and GTDon agreed that the Merc and the 2019 911 could dip into the 48s with some tuning and practice.  Not bad for "handling cars" that lack the speed of the big guns of the group.  Problem for the fast cars is when they appear at places like Laguna and Lime Rock where they lack the handling to stay up with cars like the 2019 Porsche and Merc.  So the choice will be yours as to which cars best suit all the tracks, your skill, and your taste.

The Merc GTR won race 1, but the Porsche came back to win in race 2, both by different drivers.

Average lap times from the top 5 drivers combined:
Merc GT R 1:50.393
2019 Porsche 1:50.864

(last week's avg times
Mustang 350 GT R 1:50.166
2004 Porsche 1:50.220}

Very interesting results. I think Road Atl Full will give a true test for both cars. Let me know how you guys finish out. I'll miss this one, which im a little disappointed because Road Atl is a real fun sprint track.
